Proper Care for Sensitive TeethAs per statistics, about 50-90% of people today brush their teeth with so much pressure that leads to several problems, including receding gums, bleeding from the gums, and teeth sensitivity.  Contrary to what people popularly believe, you don’t need to brush with too much pressure because this can actually do more harm than good.

If you have been experiencing shooting pain or tingling sensation when drinking cold or hot drinks, you most probably have sensitive teeth.  While a dentist can determine the severity of your teeth sensitivity and suggest treatments or ways on how you can cope up the pain, you can take action immediately and know the proper ways of caring for your sensitive teeth.

Here are a few helpful ways of properly caring for sensitive teeth.  Try to practice these measures every day and get rid of that bothersome feeling whenever you eat or drink.

Prevent gums from receding by using special advanced toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you have a tendency to brush too much, it’s advisable to use advanced toothbrushes that have sensors so that the brush automatically stops when you exert too much pressure. For toothpastes, those with potassium nitrate or strontium chloride are usually recommended because it helps reduce tooth sensitivity.

Watch the food you eat. Believe it or not, there are foods that can gradually dissolve the enamel of the teeth.  When this happens, the dentin gets exposed and resulting in tooth sensitivity.  Watch out for acidic foods like citrus fruits, tea, pickles, and tomatoes.

Switch to fluoride mouthwash. Fluoride is known to be teeth’s best friend as it restores tooth enamel.  Mouthwashes containing fluoride can help stop the pain you feel due to tooth sensitivity that is why they are highly recommended.  However, be sure to use over-the-counter ones only.

Maintain a healthy oral hygiene. This just cannot be stressed out by dentists any harder.  We have been getting this advice since we were children.  Once again, make sure to brush your teeth after every meal especially after eating acidic foods, sugar, and starch.

Have someone check you for nighttime teeth grinding. Teeth grinding causes teeth damage that could result to increased sensitivity.  If you have been proven to be grinding your teeth at night, a mouth guard can be used.

Have regular dental checkups. Your dentist knows your teeth best and regular visits to the clinic will ensure healthier teeth and maintain a good state of your dental health.

You do not have to suffer from sensitive teeth forever.  Take necessary actions in properly taking care of your teeth and free yourself from the pain that sensitive teeth bring.
